ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava invests almost CZK 200 million in ETCS

ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava, a member of the refining and petrochemical group ORLEN Unipetrol, invests in the single European Train Control System (ETCS). ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava, a significant rail carrier in the Czech Republic, will operate the ETCS on 19 railway vehicles, thus increasing its fleet’s safety, efficiency, and transport interoperability on national and international routes and between ORLEN Group companies. This solution will also strengthen synergy between railway companies in the ORLEN Group operating on the Polish and Czech markets. The project is co-financed by the State Fund of Transport Infrastructure and the Ministry of Transport’s Operating Programme Transport.

“The ETCS will be deployed on 19 railway vehicles, including four locomotives of the 753.6 range (Bizon), eight locomotives of the 753.7 range (Cobra), and seven locomotives of the 383 range (Vectron),” specifies Jaroslav Dvořák, executive of ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava. He adds: “The investment in the ETCS is almost CZK 200 million, and about 50% of this sum is financed from the State Fund of Transport Infrastructure and the Operating Programme Transport of the Ministry of Transport.”

By investing in the state-of-the-art European Train Control System (ETCS), ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava meets both European and national regulations and standards and its own safety strategy, which plays a significant role in its operations. The ETCS boosts rail transport safety and replaces many incompatible, often outdated national train control systems in individual countries.

ORLEN Unipetrol Doprava is a significant railway freight forwarder in the Czech Republic. With its contracted partners, it renders transport to the neighbouring countries, the Netherlands, and the Balkans. It offers a broad portfolio of services in the railway market. Besides transporting chemical products, it also focuses on forwarding, wagon leases, repair and cleaning services, and consulting activities. Its customers include members of the international ORLEN Group and independent companies, including major railway forwarders, foreign carriers, and chemical plants with no ties to the group.

The ORLEN Unipetrol Group is the largest refining and petrochemical company in the Czech Republic. It focuses on crude oil processing and the production, distribution and sale of vehicle fuels and petrochemical products – particularly plastics and fertilisers. It belongs among the key players on the Czech and Central European markets in all these areas. The ORLEN Unipetrol Group encompasses refineries and production plants in Litvínov and Kralupy nad Vltavou, Paramo in Pardubice, Spolana in Neratovice, REMAQ in Otrokovice, and two research centres in Litvínov and Brno. ORLEN Unipetrol also includes the ORLEN Benzina network of petrol stations in the Czech Republic and the ORLEN network in Slovakia and Hungary. ORLEN Unipetrol is one of the largest companies in the Czech Republic in terms of turnover. It employs almost 6,000 people. ORLEN Unipetrol is also a socially responsible company, particularly in the areas of supporting sustainable development, education, local communities and the environment. In 2005, ORLEN Unipetrol became part of the ORLEN Group, the largest oil refiner in Central Europe.
